On 11th March 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. On 27th March a nationwide lockdown began in South Africa to curb the spread of the novel virus. This brought most economic activity to a halt. Now, with the gradual easing of these lockdown regulations to allow for more economic activity it is important that organisations prepare to resume activities in these unprecedented times.

It is of paramount importance that the organisation has a policy that prepares the organisation for the possibility of an outbreak of COVID-19 in its workplaces or community as well as to prevent an outbreak in the workplace.

Included in this policy

  • How to keep your business running even if a significant number of workers, contractors and suppliers cannot come to your place of business – either due to local restrictions on travel or because they are ill or susceptible to falling ill.
  • The supply of the required information to workers as well as contractors in order to ensure that they are aware of what they need to do in terms of the Policy.
  • Clarity on key points such as staying away from work even if workers have only mild symptoms or have had to take simple medication which may mask the symptoms.
  • Sick leave arrangements and other mental health and social consequences of a case of COVID-19 in the workplace or in the community.

This policy is designed for an organisation that has more than 10 employees.
